From “Mesopotamian Monster”

Imagine running barefoot across the muddy land of Mesopotamia in 12,000 BC. A monster made up of salty water is chasing you. You run away, and in front of you is the monster’s twin brother. They’ve trapped you. There’s nowhere to run. There’s nowhere to hide. The Tigris and Euphrates rivers have flooded your crops and destroyed your home. Consider standing on land with two feet of water splashing on your legs. You look around, but you regret it. Debris from your pit house is floating by. The water has risen to your waist. But the worst thing you feel is the loneliness. Where are your parents?  Where are your sisters and brothers? Where is your best friend? You see no way of escape. Your legs shatter beneath you, and you fall underneath the water. Fish swim near you, and you try to value this last sight. You let out your breath and let the world slip away.
